Walkman

Walkman is the result of the ‘Advanced Visualisation Techniques’ module at The University Of Bolton.  The task was to produce a short film that conveyed a mood, setting, and theme for a pre-existing or original game concept.  The final deliverable was to be greater than 45secs in length and contain at least 3 animated cameras and objects.

As this was a subject area I was passionate about, I chose to create an original game concept with the focus on the lead character; Walkman.  Walkman is a masked extra-terrestrial who crash lands his UFO in a seemingly quiet apartment.  When he comes under attack from toy soldiers, Walkman learns to harness the power of sound and defeat the would-be assailants.

The animation was produced in 3D Studio Max and rendered with Mental Ray.  Natural Motion’s Endorphin engine was used as reference for animating interaction between the characters and the environment.  The runtime was over 3mins long and contained dozens of animated objects and cameras.  It served as a useful project to learn about rigging, animating, and rendering with Mental Ray.
